Digital Archive Trier: ‘Endnote Database’
Visitors to this website section are provided with textual and content summaries
of the original data, audio- and audio-visual materials which are all kept at theDigital Archive & Media Centre, Media Studies Department, Universität Trier / Trier University.
The Digital Archive & Media Centre at Trier University is generally accessible to scholars, social workers, or other concerned persons who are kindly requested to find out further details by e-mailing to:

The research project founded by VolkswagenStiftung (www.volkswagenstiftung.de) was part of their focus:
Conceptualizations of 'Foreign' and 'Native': Processes of Intercultural Dissociation, Mediation and Identity-Shaping
and was titled:
Regionale Kino-Erfahrungen von ‘Weiblichkeit’ als Selbst-Reflexion kultureller Identität in Kerala (Südindien). Perspektivenwechsel in der Theoriebildung über Öffentlichkeit(en) und Identität(en)/Regional Cine-Experiences of 'Femininity' in Self-Reflections of Cultural Identity in Kerala. (Western)
Theories of the Public Sphere(s) and Identities Revisitedits working title was: Self-images of women and cinema in Kerala ...
Period of the project: March 1, 2001 – December 31, 2003
Main period of feeding the database: April 2001 – June 2003
Sources and Organisation of data:
press, print, audio- and av-media from the dominant spheres of representation in KeralaThe bibliographical organisation of all data – including the audio-, and audio-visual materials, and its different media of storage (analogue or digital tapes, audio- or video-CDs, etc.) was done with the bibliographical software ‘Endnote’, and here it is accessible under “references”:
• the database contains ca. 3,200 “references”:
the surveyed Malayalam and English newspaper and magazine articles, books, manuscripts, etc. were thus evaluated, and are kept ready to read in digital, or in 1:1 xerox copy, or in original paper format. The latter are kept in files in our ‘Paper & Print’ section.
The AV-Section of our archive keeps audio-CDs (music and inter-views), and audiovisual material saved on different media like DV-Cam cassettes (with the documentary footage by B. Schulze, C. Saratchandran, and others) Video-CDs with commercial cinema films, VHS-Video tapes, hypertexts etc.;2,454 “references” to newspaper articles from the daily Indian English newspaper The Hindu form the major part of the press material. The newspaper has been read and evaluated systematically between October 2001 and June 2003; articles from this period form the main corpus of our newspaper references; there are also some articles from the time before October 2001;
1,352 of the The Hindu articles are taken from the newspaper’s online version and are 1:1 digitally reproduced and evaluated here. Under www.hindu.com readers are provided with an extensive archive (see its website under “archive/ datewise”) covering the years 2000 to 2004.
For 1,693 of selected paper and digital articles, our database provides abstracts, e.g. the most important paragraphs of the articles, ready for quotation.
Another 334 press “references” from the time between October 2001 and March 2003 were created from the paper version of the Indian English newspaper The New Indian Express.
• The database entries and evaluation include keywords# corresponding to our ‘inter-facing’ philosophy:ca. 120 keywords in this database give you broad ideas about important topics of our research, results and the archival stock, and can thus be used effectively to search for texts, inter-views, voices, views, and the diverse print, audio and audiovisual material covering similar topics. Any one reference may have one keyword or a combination of several keywords (for a complete keyword list, see below).
Our Media Centre section provides tables of content summaries (CContent_DV_* ) of the DV-Cam cassettes, and the last column relates the av-material thematically to the main strands of argumentation and theorisation through ‘inter-facing’.
‘Keywords’ and ‘inter-facing’ ...
Our understanding and perspective on the marginalised creative energies/ srishti necessitate appropriate ‘tools’ of communication to evenly re-present and positively re-enforce these energies.
Because of this we chose terms/ units which – as we hope – have the potential to reflect and resound in our ‘readers’ our conviction that the marginalised srishti’s philosophy is one which communicates to all human senses and sensitivities, that its essential characteristics are mutuality, dialogue, symbiosis, and that it is about touching and being touched, of deeper emotional echoes, and of a respectful and humorous way of dealing with the fellow beings living in societies and in the wider nature.Inter-Facing thus relates to our ‘mobilised’ phenomenological approach and documents the neglected marginalised subjective perspectives by means of our participatory action research, and then relates these in a discursive, reflective and dynamic manner to other perspectives of other communicators (eg. press, cinema).
As part of the Content Protocols of our AV-Materials which can be accessed in the ‘Media Centre’ the last column ‘inter-facing’ provides the reader with an informed comment connecting the views, voices etc. in the films to other views, voices, to issues of the marginal and the mainstream which in the course of the project were negotiated, reflected and condensed into our ‘keywords’:
